Spaceid: Primary Names and the Web3 Domain Snap

SPACE ID's Web3 Domain Snap for MetaMask resolves supported Web3 domains to wallet addresses without requiring a primary name. Primary-name settings apply to reverse resolution, where an application looks up a name associated with an address, with primary names selected per chain.

What a Primary Name Controls

A primary name identifies which name represents a wallet address during reverse resolution. The Web3 Name SDK returns a Chain Primary Name for each EVM chain and supports queries scoped to selected chains or TLDs (top-level domains). Applications can configure the chains and name services that they expose, so a reverse-lookup result depends on that scope.

The Snap starts with a domain name and retrieves its associated address. That lookup does not need to choose a name to represent the address. Setting a primary name on one chain also does not establish a primary name across every chain.

Stage Operation Relevant Condition
Domain Entry A Web3 domain name is entered into the Snap. The domain must be supported by the Snap.
Record Lookup A blockchain query retrieves the wallet address associated with the domain. Forward resolution does not require a primary-name setting.
Address Return The associated wallet address is returned for use as a transaction destination. The sender should check the returned address before sending assets.

Snap and SDK Support Boundaries

SPACE ID's Web3 Name SDK includes integrations for the non-EVM name services .sol, .sei, and .inj. That coverage does not establish the same capabilities in the MetaMask Snap. The Web3 Domain Snap knowledge base specifically states that .sei and .inj domains cannot resolve to their associated non-EVM-chain addresses through the Snap. A primary-name setting does not remove that interface limitation.

Expiry and Destination Changes

An expired SPACE ID-registered domain no longer resolves to its former wallet address under the behavior described in the Snap knowledge base. If someone else registers the name, it points to the new registered address. Primary-name selection does not preserve the former destination after expiry or re-registration.
